What is supplier relationship management (SRM)?

A central hub connected to seven supplier nodes

Supplier relationship management is the discipline of managing everything your company does with its suppliers, from the first questionnaire to the last renewal, as one connected process rather than a set of separate tasks.

What SRM covers

Six areas usually sit under SRM. They are listed below in the order a supplier meets them.

  • Onboarding and qualification: who they are and whether they are fit to supply you.
  • Sourcing: RFQs, RFPs and auctions that decide who gets the business.
  • Contracts: what was agreed, until when, and for how much.
  • Performance: delivery, quality and price measured over time.
  • Risk and compliance: expiring documents, financial, ESG and operational risk.
  • Relationship: audits, corrective actions and regular reviews.

SRM is not the same as an ERP

An ERP records the transactions: orders, receipts and invoices. SRM covers what happens around them, before and after. Good SRM reads from the ERP rather than replacing it.

Signs you have outgrown spreadsheets

The pattern is predictable. A certificate expires unnoticed. An auditor asks for evidence and it takes a day to assemble. Two buyers contact the same supplier with different terms. Nobody can say why a supplier was chosen two years ago.

  • Supplier data exists in several versions.
  • Quotes are compared by retyping them.
  • Approvals live in e-mail threads.
  • Reviews happen when someone remembers.

Where to start

You do not need to do everything at once. Most teams start with the pain that costs most: master data and document tracking, or sourcing. Pick one, make it work, then connect the next.
